Eye Mama

Eye Mama is a global movement and photographic archive, created in 2021 by the Bafta nominated filmmaker and photographer Karni Arieli. It showcases the ‘Mama Gaze’, inviting submissions by photographers who identify as mothers, parents and carers documenting their personal experience through self-portraiture.

Eye Mama is rooted in championing women, and recognises motherhood in its expansive forms, inclusive of IVF journeys, adoptive and foster care, LGBTQ+ and gender diverse parenthood.
Reaching over 70 countries, it brings together a diverse network of photographers working in different cultural and social contexts, united by the act of care. The portfolio gives visibility to all realities of motherhood, the challenges and joys it holds, reaching beyond traditional ideals and common popular culture depictions.

WHY EYE MAMA NEEDS FUNDING

Our ambition is to elevate Eye Mama into a permanent, accessible photographic digital archive. And to safeguard the work away from censorship and beyond social media. It will be a cultural and research resource for artists, curators, historians, educators and the public, ensuring such essential documentation is preserved and visible for generations to come.

We could look back in history and see what motherhood and care looked like!

Giving visibility to care as we can’t empower the invisible.
