Our Heritage Outside, a digital publication project, was created to elevate, celebrate, and share sidelined or often buried Black history in the National Park Service system. The project casts a spotlight on the heroes, champions, and everyday Black Americans who contributed to creating and maintaining each of the 63 National Parks. Through the project, their legacy will be top of mind for audiences as it relates to Black History and as it relates to National Parks history. The publication takes a multifaceted and digital-first approach to bring these forgotten stories to wider audiences. Our Heritage Outside has already researched and documented hundreds of biographies, histories, and stories from parks across the nation, and this timely grant opportunity will help us complete more of the research and writing, moving the project toward digital publication.
