The Last Great American Sunset

The Last Great American Sunset is an experimental, surrealist short film. It follows Maya, a young woman in a near-future America where the sun has been hidden behind manufactured clouds. Institutions have recast belief in the sun as conspiracy, mental illness, or an outdated metaphor.

From childhood to adulthood, she carries that knowing through a world that punishes it at every turn. She is dismissed by the academic who has “deconstructed” the sun, called a terrorist by the president who outlawed belief in it, reduced to a data point by the scientist whose machines cannot lie. She walks through the same church three times across her life and comes out different each time. Even Uncle Sam has to seduce her with burlesque theatrics to convince her she’s ‘misguided’.

The film moves between found-footage documentary and surrealist void sequences, shot against the visual language of the classic American frontier. Maya doesn’t expose the conspiracy, she transcends it. She doesn’t find the sun… she becomes it.
